Given the scenario we live in, individual protection masks have gained enormous importance in the fight against COVID-19. For this reason, there was a shortage in the textile market and the emergence of new models.
In the textile world, there are 2 types of raw material: fabric and non-woven, and the second term was created to designate a wide group of textiles produced by unconventional methods, ie, different from weaving, knitting and traditional felting.
The main difference in terms of filtering efficiency of both, can be seen in the image below, where it shows in microscopic images the formation of fibers and wefts.
Porosity is what makes the difference in the filtration and passage of microparticles. The fabric, as shown in the image above, has uniformity in the fibers in both directions, maintaining a linear distance between them (larger pores). The non-woven fabric is interwoven by the manufacturing method, maintaining a smaller distance and distributing the air flow between the fibers, making the passage of air and particles in general more difficult.
